About Us
The Office of Inspector General monitors the Department's use of the billions of dollars it spends each year on a diverse range of programs and activities. Through its 12 bureaus, Commerce provides national and local weather services, advances technological and scientific innovation, protects and restores environmental resources, provides key economic and demographic data, promotes international trade, and supports economic development. These activities in one way or another touch the lives of every American, impact U.S. business and industry, and play a critical role in the nation's economic well-being. |
To keep the Department accountable for its use of federal funds, we conduct audits, evaluations, and investigations of Commerce activities. We present the findings of our audits and evaluations to Commerce operating officials and agency heads for their review and comment before we release the information in a final report. Investigations are referred to the Department of Justice for prosecution if evidence of criminal wrongdoing is found or civil recoveries are possible. Investigative findings may also be referred to the appropriate agency official for administrative action. |
